Steve Harries

Stephen Harries is an International Development Practitioner and organisational leader with 15+ years of experience working in over 12 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. He has worked in conflict and humanitarian contexts, post conflict countries and in transformational development.

 

He trained at Loughborough University gaining a Masters of Science in Environmental Public Health Engineering specialising in Water, Sanitation and hygiene in developing countries. His undergraduate degree in theology brings an understanding of what shapes peoples thinking and behaviour and how spirituality and religion impacts on a society and culture. Prior to this he qualified as an electrician and managed construction projects in New Zealand, USA, U.K and Africa. Stephen recently completed a postgraduate finance and accounting paper from Waikato University Business School.

Stephen brings strong experience and understanding of Organisational leadership, development and strategic planning having managed more than two hundred national and international staff over three years as Country Director for World Vision International in East Timor. Prior to his time in East Timor he worked for three years as Country Director for World Vision International in Solomon Islands. He brings HR and finance oversight management experience including budgeting, international recruitment, performance management and management reporting.

 

Stephen has been engaged on many WASH related projects in the Pacific, Asia and Africa and his involvement has ranged from scoping and strategic planning to design work through to monitoring, evaluation and critical analysis. His recent work saw him partnering with Western Provincial government in PNG to write a five year WASH strategic plan incorporating the extractive industries, INGOs, AusAID and other major donors. He was also employed in 2013 by World Vision Australia and World Vision PNG to act as technical advisor in the design of a ten million dollar WASH project in PNG.

 

His skill set includes fund development and donor management, multi stakeholder project management and has excellent facilitation, negotiation and conflict management skills. He has considerable experience with large international donors including INGOs, USAID, European Union, AusAID, New Zealand AID Program and corporate donors. He brings a cultivated cultural competence and a demonstrated ability to capitalise on cross cultural contexts and relate to people across any social spectrum. Stephen role models health, fitness and fullness of life.
