Capacity Building and Training

FH Designs understands that capacity building is at the heart of every good development program, but also that capacity building is a means to an end and not an end in itself. As development practitioners we have all been involved in mentoring local counterpart staff in NGOs and government, as well as the design and provision of more formalised training programs. Ross is an internationally recognised training specialist with vast experience designing and delivering participatory training programs across the world, and is known for his warmth and humour in his delivery. Joanna has advanced facilitation skills and qualifications and has extensive experience delivering training programs across Asia and the Pacific. As an organisation we share our materials and experience and so all of us are able to tap into the collective skills and experience base that is contained within FH Designs.

Program/Project Design

All of FH Designs' consultants began their careers as development practitioners working and living in developing countries at a grass-roots level. As a result our knowledge of development principles is well founded and based on realistic assessments of what works and what doesn't. This foundation has stood us in good stead in recent years when we have been asked to advise on or assist with the design of programs and projects by agencies from NGOs to AusAID. Examples of recent program designs that FHDesigns consultants have been involved with include program designs and proposal preparation for Plan, World Vision and IRC, and the design of the recently released AusAID Civil Society WASH Fund.

FH Designs has expertise in the design, implementation, analysis and documentation of both qualitative and quantitative research activities focusing on rural electrification, WASH and gender equality. Our consultants' research activities have identified, documented and built on best practice, contributed to the research skills and capacity of NGO's and government agencies, and produced culturally appropriate and practical outputs widely used in the sector. Examples of project deliverables are included below, alongside examples of recent papers published by consultants.

Monitoring and Evaluation

FH Designs has expertise both in the development of M&E frameworks and in conducting monitoring, review and evaluation consultancies. As demonstrated by the sample of recent projects set out below, we are particularly strong in M&E related to WASH and gender and social inclusion. We specialise in the use of highly-participatory evaluation approaches, including strengths-based approaches, that engage stakeholders as active learners in the evaluation process. Not only does this enhance the effectiveness and insight of our evaluations but it also ensures learning is owned by and accessible to the stakeholders.
