Michael Simon

Michael is an expert in water governance and natural resource management. He has over 20 years experience working in overseas development and has specialized in program development, project management and on ground implementation working with farmer/ fishers and their NGO allies. Michael’s skills are in building strong and effective networks – focused on enabling greater influence for civil society in water and natural resource management.

 

He is a skilled facilitator and trainer; especially in building capacity of civil society in advocacy; while simultaneously working as a broker for engagement between stakeholder groups. Michael represented Oxfam International as one of the twelve person multi-stakeholder Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Forum which developed a Sustainability Protocol for Hydropower. He has led Oxfam’s infrastructure team on environmental and social safeguards and standards, and is an expert on gender in this context.

Working with Oxfam, Michael has been a leader in successful bid teams for government and private foundation major projects. Michael has extensive experience in negotiation and representation around issues of natural resource governance and rights – especially in regards to water management and infrastructure development.

 

He has published a number of manuals, guidelines and reports for Oxfam in areas of resource rights and good practice in environmental and social policy and practice. Michael has wide experience throughout Asia – especially in the greater Mekong region; and has worked in Africa, South America, South Asia and many developed countries. He is currently completing a Masters in Integrated Water Management and was awarded full scholarship for this study.
